Gardens

Gardens display at once a thick exuberance, a somewhat tangle profusion
which can seem muddled and which is voluntarily not moderated
by  "rules" of pictorial composition.

Paintbrushes come and go, draw lines, forms; colours lay down as grass,
shrubs and trees dance cheerfully,
their roots in the water, the branches in the wind and the head towards the light.
Gardens of Andalusia and Morocco prove the nature can be delirious,
so why civilize it on the canvas?

In spring 1989, René Girot begins a "sober" picture : only one palm tree
is erected at the edge of a swimming pool, in front of an unoccupied sky.
But palm trees grow and occupy all the space.

Two years later, this painting ( " The palm grove" -76 3/4x44 7/8 in.-H8921)
is built from three terraced zones : the uppermost third where palm-trees
are oversized,
the median zone in front of us- as in front of an opened window -
and the lower one, seen in high angle shot.
The perspective is reversed; usually, the top of the picture is representing
the background.

This will be the origin of Articulated Gardens.

Documents from a stay in Rome in April, 1990, showing stacked trees -  specially pines  -
used as refuge to statues and allowed to pass, in the twilight, disturbing lights, gave the idea of this painting series where the split up landscape bounces, lit by different sources :
it's a walk in a big park where things come to light at a road bend, as revealed
by the combustion of a Bengal light.

A booklet reproducing in colours twelve of these "Articulated Gardens "
was published in May, 1992
by the Regional Council of Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur
(six simultaneous exhibitions from May 16 till June 12.)

Sixteen paintings from 1978 to1989 are also reproduced in this brochure.
